Let’s start our journey…

How to become financially independent

7 effective ways to become financially independent

The goal of most people should be how  to become financially independent. To achieve this you should have enough cash, savings and investments to afford the lifestyle you want for yourself and your nearest and dearest.

With the right financial planning, it is possible to manage your debt (and stop it from increasing), those unforeseen expenses that can push you over the edge financially.

Stop repeating the same mistakes again and again! Let’s get into good financial habits with these 9 steps.

Step 1

Set Goals

Firstly, get a folder or book you can store all your  goals. What does financial independence mean to you? A vague dream is not a goal! There’s the saying, “Be specific to be terrific”, and that’s what you need to be. Write down figures for your ultimate goal, how much money in your personal bank account? Write down the exact date you want to achieve this goal. Now that you have an end date, work back in 5 year increments making goals for time frame (5,10,15,20). So now you can work towards your 5 year goal then 10 etc. to ensure you stay on track. After you have got a rough outline you can add your 1 year goal, which will bring everything into focus and hopefully inspire you to go for it!

Step 2

Make a Budget

Create a monthly budget—and cling to it for dear life! Having a cast iron budget will ensure everything is paid that should be and importantly , you are now controlling your finances! Well done!

This habit will become second nature to you and will change how you think about spending money. A good tip is to write down EVERYTHING you spend in a month, and this will highlight where you are wasting money on posh coffees etc.

Step 3

Pay Off Credit Cards

Credit card debt is the out-and-out worst debt you can have because it is EXCEPTIONALLY  expensive.  If you use a credit card for a purchase and do not pay it back in full, the credit card company charges you interest on what you owe and that’s how they make their money!

Clearing credit card debts should be your priority, it may take a year or two but keep at it and clear those cards!

Step 4

Build an emergency fund

It is a great idea to protect yourself with an rainy day fund, so you can protect you from unforeseen expenses. A good amount is £1,500. To build the fund, automate a small monthly transfer and any spare cash into a separate savings account until it totals at least 3 months of expenses. Make sure you will be able to access funds without any penalties.

Step 5

Live Below Your Means

Create a modest lifestyle by having a mindset of less is more, will declutter your brain as well as your finances! Indeed, many wealthy individuals developed a habit of living below their means before rising to affluence.

By controlling your spending, and realising a lot of things you may want but don’t really need. This is one of the best habits to have, try it for 30 days. Write down everything you spend in 30 days. This will highlight to you where you are wasting your hard earned money.

Step 6

Invest

Once you are managing your finances and have your spending under control, you will need to start investing. Among  one of the safest ways to invest is starting a mutual fund, which is usually a spread of safe blue chip companies. There are numerous other ways to invest.
